Yoga for Pre-schoolers

June 18, 2025

The preschool years are beautifully unpredictable. One moment a child is twirling with joy, the next they’re tangled in big feelings they don’t quite know how to name. It’s a time of rapid growth - physically, mentally, emotionally and as parents or educators, we’re often looking for ways to support that growth in meaningful, gentle ways.

Yoga, in its quiet wisdom, offers something simple yet powerful. It’s not about perfect poses or long meditation sessions. With preschoolers, yoga becomes a playful doorway into presence, into movement with purpose, and stillness with comfort.

Why Yoga Works Right for This Age

Little children are often full of energy, but they’re also still figuring out how to listen to their bodies. They might not know when they’re tired or overwhelmed. They may not yet have the words for frustration or excitement. Yoga meets them exactly where they are.

It’s not just about flexibility or balance (though those come too). Yoga teaches kids how to be with themselves. How to take a deep breath when something feels too big. How to notice the beat of their own heart. These small lessons, learned in a fun and loving way, shape how they’ll relate to themselves and the world for years to come.

The Unique Needs of Preschoolers

Between ages 3 and 5, a child’s brain is developing at lightning speed. They’re learning how to move through space, how to wait their turn, how to share their toys, and how to make sense of the feelings bubbling up inside them. At this stage, their muscles need movement, and their minds need rhythm.

Structured movement - like the kind yoga offers - helps with motor skills, spatial awareness, and even language development. When we pair that with breath and imagination, it becomes more than just exercise. It becomes emotional support.

What Makes Yoga So Helpful?

It’s the combination of movement and mindfulness. That’s where the magic is.

A yoga class for pre-schoolers might look like a zoo adventure. “Let’s be tall trees!” “Now let’s crawl like cats!” But underneath the play is something very real: a chance to build strength, practice focus, and settle the nervous system.

When a child hums like a bumblebee in Bhramari breathing, they’re not just having fun. They’re activating the vagus nerve - the body’s built-in braking system for stress. When they balance on one foot in Tree Pose, they’re developing coordination and concentration at the same time.

5 Easy, Kid-Friendly Yoga Poses

These simple postures are great to introduce at home or in class. No fancy props required - just a soft mat or carpet, and a little space to move.

1. Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

Let them pretend they’re strong trees with roots. One foot presses into the opposite leg, arms reaching like branches.

Good for: balance, stillness, and inner focus.

2. Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana)

Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana)

Kids love this. On hands and knees, they alternate arching and rounding the back, meowing and mooing if they like.

Good for: spinal mobility and awareness of the body’s rhythm.

3. Downward Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

Downward Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

They form an upside-down V with hands and feet pressing down. It’s energizing but grounding.

Good for: stretching legs and back, strengthening arms.

4. Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana)

Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana)

Sitting with feet together, they gently flap their knees like wings. Sometimes it helps to imagine being a butterfly in a garden.

Good for: opening hips and calming the body.

5. Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana)

Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana)

Lying on the tummy, they lift the chest slowly, like a snake waking up in the sun.

Good for: posture, back strength, and heart opening.

Two Breathing Games That Calm and Center

Breathing is often overlooked with little ones, but it can make a huge difference. These exercises are easy to teach and bring instant calm - without feeling like a “technique.”

1. Bumblebee Breath (Bhramari)

Deep breath in… and then hum gently like a bee on the exhale. Kids love the sound.

What it does: soothes the nervous system and helps release tension.

2. Balloon Belly Breathing

Ask them to imagine a balloon in their tummy. As they breathe in, the balloon gets big. As they breathe out, it shrinks.

What it does: builds awareness of deep, intentional breathing - a skill that helps with emotional regulation.

What the Research Tells Us (In Case You’re Wondering)

You don’t have to take our word for it - science is increasingly catching up with what yoga teachers and parents have known for years.

A study published in Psychology Research and Behavior Management found that yoga and mindfulness programs in early education settings helped children feel more balanced emotionally and improved their quality of life.

In Italy, the renowned Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù reported that yoga helped kids manage anger, anxiety, and even body image issues. That’s right - when children are guided through mindful movement early on, they’re more likely to develop healthier relationships with themselves.

A Gentle Start to a Lifelong Practice

The truth is, yoga won’t turn a preschooler into a calm, zen master overnight. That’s not the goal. The goal is to give them little tools - tiny seeds - that will quietly grow over time.

It’s in the way they pause before reacting. The way they stand tall when nervous. The way they remember to breathe when upset. These subtle shifts matter more than we realize.

And the best part? They get to have fun doing it. Roaring like lions, stretching like dogs, fluttering like butterflies - all while building the very foundations that will help them move through life with confidence, connection, and care.
